ATHLETICS.

SOUTH CANTERBURY AMATEUR CLUB. The Executive of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club held a meeting on Monday evening. Present — Mr Mcßae (in the chair); Messrs Eastwood, Cameron, Jackson, McArthur, Foot. Mr G. Cowles was elected to the position of assistant cycling handicapper, to fill the \acancy caused through Mr R. Hopkins having left the district. A communication received from the Canterbury Centre asked for a donation towards the cost of sending the Canterbury team to Dunedin —It was agreed to donate one guinea. The treasurer’s report showed the finances of the Club to be in a satisfactory position. Accounts for £2 3s 4d were passed for payment. The secretary reported that the last evening meeting was a huge success both from the point of view of entries and also the attendance of the public. The response of the public to the collection was most gratifying. It was decided to hold the next evening sports meeting on March 12. and it was decided that the meeting would start promptly at 6.15 on account of failing light. It was decided to hold the following events. Athletic—loo yards, 440 yds. 1 mile, putting the shot, 120 hurdles. Cycling—i mile and 2 miles. The secretary reported that four competitors held two buttons each for the Mcßae Cup, and in view of the fact that the Cup meeting was following closely after the next evening meeting, it was decided that the next meeting be a button meeting to decide the winner of the Mcßae Cup. The following officials were appointed:—Supervisor, Mr A. Jackson; judges, Messrs A. Malcolm, J. A. Norrie, J. W. Waldie, J. A. Hay, H. H. Fraser; stewards and marksmen, Messrs Nicholas. Cameron, Murray, McArthur, Phillips, Scott, Collins, Malcolm Jnr. judges of cycling, Mr C. E. Hall, Mr W. H. Hall, Mr J. A. Hay; timekeepers, Messrs Fraser, Hind, Young, Dunn, handicappers, athletic, Mr E. D. Mcßae, Mr A. McArthur; cycling, Mr E. H. Eastwood, Mr G. Cowles; number steward, Mr G. R. Park; chairman of grounds, C. W. Cameron; starter, J. Davie; secretary, E. C. J. Foot.

It was decided to apply to the Caledonian Society for permission to use their grounds for a half-day meeting on March 28. A sub-committee consisting of Mr Eastwood, Mr Jackson, Mr Mcßae and Mr Foot was appointed to draw up a list of handicap events for inclusion in the Championship meeting. The secretary was authorised to make all immediate arrangements in connection with the Cup meeting.
