S.P.C.A.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Council of the South Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday. Present —Mr F. F. Neale (chairman). Mesdames E. Jones, M. Harper, ancl Messrs M. Harper, C. G. Baker, W. D. Revell (secretary), and G. Gliddon (inspector).

The general manager of the New Zealand Railways, Mr H. H. Stirling, wrote stating so far as the issue of an annual pass to the Society’s inspector was concerned, that the Department ol Internal Affairs had advised him that Cabinet had directed that a further issue of free passes to inspectors of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals be declined. The Department was therefore not prepared to accept a debit for the passes for this year. In these circumstances it was regretted that the pass as desired could not be supplied. Relative to the same matter,- Sir Charles Statham wrote stating that there was not much hope of having the passes restored in the meantime, but he suggested that the Society should get into touch with the Rev. Clyde Carr. M.F., with a view to taking this question up with the Government later on. The Canterbury Society wrote soliciting the views of the Society on the question of establishing an entirely New Zealand magazine in the interests of the Junior League throughout the Dominion.

It was decided that, provided a magazine could be produced at a reasonaole cost, the Society would give its support to it.

The secretary submitted a statement in connection with the recent gymkhana held at Holme Station. This showed that the total receipts amounted to £lO5/15/-, and after payment of expenses and for goods the profit was £6l 8/9.

The secretary reported having sent letters of appreciation to all those who had assisted the Society in connection with the holding of the gymkhana. Mr Baker moved that a vote of thanks and appreciation be accorded all those who helped in connection with the function; especially Mr and Mrs A. S. Elworthy for placing the grounds at Holme Station at the disposal of the Society for the gymkhana; and further to Mr W. D. Revell for the vast amount of work he did in arranging everything.

This was seconded by Mr Harper, and carried unanimously. It was reported that Mr Meehan who won the “hidden sovereign” at the gymkhana had donated it to the Society’s funds.

A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Meehan.

The inspector’s report giving an account of his visits during the month was adopted.
