CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

HANDICAPS FOR NEW YEAR’S DAY. The following handicaps have been declared by Mr Gilbert Tozer for the cash running and field events to be held at the South Canterbury Caledonian Society’s sports on January 1, 1931. As usual the Caledonian Society have received a first-class field of runners in the cash events, the Citizens’ Handicap drawing the finest field it would be possible to get together with the exception of D. McLennan. W. D. Inwood, the scratch man, is a fine type of runner, and this season has won the Southbridge and Doyleston Sheffields. S. Polaschek is a very consistent runner, having won the Citizens’ Handicap at Timaru in 1929, and the Sheffield at Temuka, Easter 1929. He has been placed in most prominent races since. W. B. Grade won the Citizens’ Handicap here on the second day of last meeting, and ran second to Inwood at Southbridge. A. F. Ellis won the Pleasant Point and Hinds Sheffields last season, and is again in fine form. R. A. Drury won the St. Patrick’s Sheffield at Christchurch this year. C. H. Davison has struck form again, running second in the big race at Waimate on Boxing Day. He ran very well the season before last, winning the Gala Handicap at Ashburton, and was beaten only by inches in the Citizens’ Handicap at Timaru. McKinnon is a most improved runner, having just left the amateur ranks before Labour Day, when he won the Gala Handicap at Ashburton and also the Sheffield at Temuka on Boxing Day. In the distance events A. Annear, the well known local runner, and R. Hillary also a Timaru man who has just joined the cash ranks, won the mile event at St. Andrews from scratch in fine style.
