OBITUARY.

H. D. EDWARDS. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, December 29. Private advice has been received in Wellington that Mr H. D. Edwards, who retired last April from the position of Controller of Savings Banks, died suddenly in Paris on Boxing Day. Mr Edwards joined the Post and Telegraph Department as a cadet in the learners’ gallery at Wellington in 1890. Subsequently he served at Westport, Lawrence and Greymouth. He was transferred to the Chief Post Office at Wellington in 1907, and was appointed Controller in 1925. He always took a great interest in the educational side of his profession, and was one of the first officers of the Department to qualify as a member of the Institute of Accountants. The funeral took place at Versailles on 27th December. Mrs Edwards, who was accompanying her husband, will return to New Zealand as soon as possible. T. G. YOUNG. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, December 29. One of Dunedin’s oldest and most highly esteemed business men, Mr Thomas Gray Young, passed away this morning, after an illness extending over six months. The late Mr Young was born at East, Calder, Scotland, seventy-eight years ago, and arrived in New Zealand in 1869, to assist his brother, Mr George Young, in the well-known jewellery business established by the latter in 1862. In 1877, Mr Young was admitted to a partnership in the firm of G. and T. Young, and when Mr George Ybung proceeded to the Old Country to do the buying for the firm, full scope_was given for the organising ability of Mr T. G. Young, who became the New Zealand manager of the firm, which he brought to the foremost position in the jewellery business in New Zealand. He was associated with the firm right up to the time of his illness, and apart from a few trips Home he devoted his time strictly to business. His chief interest outside was in bowling. He was the oldest playing member of the Dunedin Bowling Club. For many years Mr Young was a member of the Deacons’ Court of Knox Church, and he was always closely associated with the activities of that Church. He leaves a widow, and a family of two sons Messrs W. C. Young (Auckland), and T. G. Young, jun. (Dunedin), daughters—Mrs J. Armstrong edin), Mrs J. Murray (Palmerston North), and Misses M. and E. Young (Dunedin).
