FOOTBALL.

PRIMARY GCHOOLS RUGBY. SOUTH CANTERBURY DEFEAT CANTERBURY. (Special to the “Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 22. In the primary school representative football match played here to-day. South Canterbury defeated Canterbury by 8 points to 6 (two tries, one converted, to two unconverted tries). The game was exceedingly fast in the first spell, when the South Canterbury passing and attacking was definitely superior to that of the heavier northern team. In the second spell, the heavier Canterbury forwards dominated the play, their weight being particularly noticeable in the set scrums. For the winners the prominent players were G. Harrison, J. Mitchell, R. Findlay and H. Wellford.

SOUTH CANTERBURY V. OTAGO. TO-DAY’S REPRESENTATIVE GAME. The South Canterbury representatives will meet Otago at Fraser Park to-day and as the selectors have chosen the best available players the team should give a good account of itself. The Otago-South Canterbury match is one of the most important in South Canterbury Union’s calendar and it is expected that the 1930 contest will be productive of bright and interesting Rugby. The selectors’ original choice stands as far as the forwards are concerned but in the back line G. P. Lawson (Old Boys) at five-eighths, A. Dale (Mackenzie) half back, and E. Wilkes (Star) on the wing, will replace W. Neutzfc' (Old Boys), P. Roper (Celtic)., and L. Mahan (Old Boys). The visitors who' arrived in Timaru last evening, should field a fairly strong combination. D. Lindsay, who performed most creditably with the All Blacks in South Africa, is their full back, while South Canterbury’s ranks will be strengthened by W. A. Strang, who will be playing in a similar position to when he so impressed the crowds at Wellington during the final test against the British team. The game, which will be refereed by Mi* A. B. Rowlands, is timed to commence at 3 p.m. It is expected that the teams will take the field as follows:

SOUTH CANTERBURO. (Green and Black). L. Connolly G. Murray A. Lawson E; Wilkes A. Strang G. P. Lawson A. Dale L. Neutze J. Callanan G. Adkins G. Giddings G. Phillips F. Stevenson D. Callanan F.
