AUTOMOBILE ASSN.
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Automobile Association was held last night. Present—Messrs W. T. Ritchie (in the chair), C. S. Bruce. F. S. Shrimpton, G. \. Bridges, J. T. Brady, A. L. Gee, J. H. Don, J. M. Jenkins, W H. Orbell and A. P. Kelland.
The chairman explained, with reference to the newly instituted road patrol, that the question of the selection of a car and patrolman had been fully discussed, and it was estimated that the car could be run at a cost of 2£d per mile This was a very liberal estimate, and when the scheme was properly organised the cost would, in all probability be a trifle over 2d per mile. The figure finally decided upon was £2OO. However, it was anticipated that the car would pay for itself in about two years. He asked the meeting to confirm the action of the subcommittee.
On the motion of Mr Gee, who congratulated the sub-committee on its wise expenditure, the action was approved. A letter from the Canterbury Association advised that at a meeting of the Council it had been decided unanimously to nominate Mr F. W. Johnston for the office of president of the South Island Motor Union and Mr H. C. Harley as vice-president. The S.I.M.U. forwarded copies of the minutes of the last meeting of the Executive Committee.
With reference to a complaint regarding a macrocarpa hedge at Saltwater Creek, the Levels County Council wrote that the engineer had been instructed to inspect the hedge and report to the Council. Considerable correspondence relative to the increase in the price of petrol, and the refusal of the Government to allow grants to the Revenue and Construction Funds of the Main Highways Board, was tabled and received without comment.
Mr F. Owers (patrolman) reported on the work done since the inception of the scheme.
Arising from the report, it was decided that the Geraldine County Council be written to drawing attention to the state of the road at the approaches to Cooper’s Creek bridge and to the necessity of widening the corner of the main road at the southern approach to the Rangitata Bridge. A remit to the annual meeting of the S.l.M.U.:—“That all affiliated Associations charge the same membership subscriptions,” moved by Mr Brady, and seconded by Mr Gee, was approved. Accounts amounting to £72/18/2 were passed for payment.
