GERALDINE.

STEADY RAIN. | Bitterly cold conditions were experienced in Geraldine yesterday morning, and rain commenced to fall before lunch. It continued steadily throughout the afternoon and evenj ing, and the temperature indicated that snow was falling in the back j country. Nine degrees of frost were i recorded on the Downs on Saturday morning, the heaviest ever recorded there, but no record was taken on the flat, as the School thermometer is broken. GENERAL NEWS. The streams throughout the Geraldine district have been exceptionally , low this winter, and in some instances settlers have actually been short of water. At the Oddfellows’ euchre tourney, Mr H. Blissett and Mrs H. Lintem won the prizes. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court is set down for Geraldine to-day. The Geraldine Girl Guides and Brownies held a Church parade at St. Mary’s on Sunday morning. WORK IS APPRECIATED. “On behalf of the settlers of the South Orari River District,” wrote Mr S. M. Trumper, Orari, to the Geraldine County Council yesterday, “I wish to thank one and all for the valuable work and time you put in at Orari, and hope it will give you no more trouble.” It was remarked by one Councillor that it was pleasing to see their work appreciated, and it was decided to receive the letter with grateful thanks. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr C. S. Thomas, of Christchurch, was in Geraldine yesterday. Mr B. Heaton, of the staff of the Union Bank, is paying a visit to Geraldine. A UNIVERSAL HOLIDAY. That it did not matter what day the half holiday w T as, as long as it was i universal, was the opinion of one Geraldine tradesman when conversing I with a “Herald” repreesntative yes- ; terday. He thought that legislation ! should be framed so that Geraldine j and Temuka would have a combined j vote on the matter. “There is a comJ munity of interest between the centres in South Canterbury,” he stated, “and the lack of a universal half-holiday is detrimental to this both from a social and a business point of view.” SCHOOL GAMES ABANDONED. Teams from the Geraldine District High School journeyed to Temuka yesterday to engage in football and basketball matches. The games were abandoned, however, owing to the wet weather. SAWMILLER KILLED. Fatal injuries were received by Henry George Daniel Burgess, a married man, at the St. Leonard’s sawmills, Ruapuna, on Saturday morning, when a tree fell on the engine he was driving. Details of the accident are not very full, but it appears that Burgess, who was about forty-three years of age, and has a family of six young children, was driving a traction engine when a tree, to which the engine was attached, swung round and struck him as he was endeavouring to get clear. Burgess received severe injuries to his head and hips. Dr. Miller was summoned from Ashburton, but the unfortunate man succumbed before medical aid arrived. FOOTBALL. For the first time for a number of years, the Geraldine Club played three home games on Saturday, and they celebrated the occasion by claiming three victories. In the third grade match, the Geraldine team played a hard game with Old Boys. In the first half, the home side had the better of the play, and Cain got over to score in the corner from a forward rush. The second try was secured by Bryant from a passing rush, and L. Wood was successful in adding the extra points, placing Geraldine eight points up at half time. Old Boys opened up the game in the second half, but failed to penetrate the home defence till well on in the game, when a fine solo run by a Blue player resulted in a try. The concluding score was: Geraldine 8; Old Boys 3. Mr L. Harper was referee. The fourth grade game was not impressive, the home team gaining a victory by six points to nil. For Geraldine, Cain and Pratt were the scorers. Mr Harper was referee. In the fifth grade match, Geraldine proved too strong for Zingari, who met with defeat by sixteen points to nil. won by the Theatre this year. Representing the Universal Films, Mr P. B. Wakeford made the official presentation on behalf of his company. He said Mr Knight had gained 293 points out of a possible 300. The people in Geraldine were fortunate in that theirs was a municipal concern, and they were shareholders in the honour that had been conferred. The Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy), who handed Mr Knight the cup on behalf of the Company, congratulated him on winning the cup. The civic theatre had proved a great success, and although it was not turning over tremendous profits, it was paying its way and was a splendid asset to tne township. They all knew of Mr Knight’s enthusiasm, and were pleased that he had been successful. Mr Knight returned thanks. The cup, which stands about a foot high, is of solid silver, and becomes the property of the winner. The representative of Messrs John R. Procters, the well-known Opticians of Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine again next Wednesday, 6th., and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel
