BASKETBALL. A match on Tuesday last between the primary school senior basketball team and the teachers was won by the latter by 8 points to 6. Patterson, J. Frewan, W. Hannifin. Emergencies—V. Tay, K. Shewan. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Waimate Borough Council was held on Tuesday night. Present—The Mayor (Mr G. Dash), Councillors Twomey, Richardson, Lewis, Paul, Atwill, and Kirb. Dr. T. W. Wylie arrived late. An apology for non-attendance was received from Councillor Hoskins. Correspondence. The Prime Minister wrote acknowledging the Council’s message of condolence in connection with the death of Sir Joseph War c and notified that it would be forwarded to relatives. The Inspector of Fire Brigades wrote in reply to the Council’s request for the inspection of fire escapes of the public buildings in Waimate, advising that he would be unable to visit the South Island for some considerable time.

Power Board Finances. The secretary of the Local Government Loans Board wrote stating that the Council’s objection to the South Canterbury Power Board's proposed loan of £7OOO would be placed before the Board, whsn the application came to hand. The Temuka Town Clerk advised that their Council had taken no action in connection with the Waimate Council’s request for support of the request for an independent auditor’s inspection of the Power Board’s accounts.

The Geraldine Town Clerk, writing in reference to the same matter, advised that his Council had expressed satisfaction with the management of the Board’s affairs and confidence in the representatives. The Council felt the Audit Department would see that the accounts were properly kept. Heavy Traffic Fees. The Mackenzie County Council forwarded a copy of a letter sent to the Timaru Borough Council, central . distributing local body, giving notice to move: “That the percentage basis of the proposed allocation as worked out by the Mackenzie County Council be agreed to.” The Mayor said that the Mackenzie Council sought their assistance in the matter of equity in allocating heavy license fees, but when the Council had sought their assistance on Power Board matters they did not even have the courtesy to acknowledge receipt of the letter. It would probably cost the Council two guineas to send representatives to the conference. After discussion, it was decided that the same members who attended the previous conference attend the next one. The Railways. A circular was received in regard to the presentation of evidence to the Royal Commission on Railways. In regard to branch lines, it was desired that responsible bodies in the districts concerned confer on the matter of the submission of evidence.—lt was decided that the letter be referred to the Retailers’ Association.

The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce advised in connection with the matter of submitting evidence to the Railway Commission, that the facilities of the Chamber r zre available for convening a conference, and in assisting in the preparation of such evidence.—lt was decided to refer this also to the Retailers’ Association, and that the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce be advised to that effect. The Temuka Borough Council wrote asking what regulations the Waimate Council had adopted regarding pie carts.—The clerk’s action in forwarding information was endorsed. The use of Victoria Park, with the right to charge admission, was granted the Waimate High School for August 2nd, for the secondary schools’ basketball tourney. Mr C. V. Hart made a request that the Council authorise a 10-foot kerb culvert to his residence.—Granted. The foreman’s, General Committee, and Works Committee’s reports were adopted. The Foresters’ Lodge wrote in connection with the licensing of their hall.—Referred to the General Committee, with power to act. Mr R. p. Harris wrote asking that improvements be made to footpath on Coronation Street.—Referred to Works Committee. General. Councillor Paul asked if any report had been received from the engineer in connection with increased water supply.—it was stated that no reply had been received so far. Councillor Paul moved that the town clerk write to the engineer on the matter.—Carried. The offer of the Public Library to lease land at their premises at a nominal rental of 1/- per annum was accepted. Councillor Atwill, supported by Councillor Twomey, brought up the matter of four local unemployed married men who had approached him, and asked if the Council could find any work for them.—lt was decided that applicants be referred to the steward of the Hospital Committee. Councillor Twomey introduced the question of improvement in the Council Chamber’s seating arrangements.—Referred to the General Committee for report. Councillor Twomey spoke on the condition of the racecourse road.—lt was decided that it be given a light load of shingle. It was decided to place a covered seat at the dental clinic.—The Mayor advised that timber had been provided free, the Council to provide the iron. It was decided to place seats also at the following places:—Mill Road, Racecourse Road, and Manse Street triangle. The town clerk brought up the matter of installation of septic tanks outside the borpugh, and connected with the borough water supply.—lt was resolved that in future application must first be made to the Council. Re town sections in John Street, it was resolved to cancel the lease of

At 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday, Frederick George Falconer, an ex-seaman, took an apoplectic fit in Glasgow Street. Constable Marsh was summoned, and later Dr. Wylie came on the scene, and the patient was conveyed to the Public Hospital in the ambulance.
