ATHLETICS

TIMARU HARRIER COMMITTEE A meeting of the Timaru Harrier Management Committee was held last evening. Mr J. A. Norrie was in the chair, and Messrs Cameron, Hetherington, Lund, Cave, Mclnnes, Dennison and Foot were present. The secretary presented a statement covering the outlay in connection with the Temuka-to-Timaru road race, which showed that the receipts from entries did not cover the expenditure entailed by approximately £1 10s. Regret was expressed that the collection taken up only realised £1 7s 3d. The secretary was instructed to pay accounts totalling £l3 14s lOd. The committee learnt with regret that a visiting runner from Dunedin had lost a valuable fountain pen which he won in a cross-country event in Dunedin. Motions, of thanks were carried to all those who placed their cars at the disposal of the committee; the donors of trophies; and to the large number of people who billeted the visiting runners.

In connection with the Inter-Club Championship to take place on Saturday next, the committee were informed that the Magistrate, Mr C. R .OnWalker, had given a handsome cup for this event. The committee unanimously agreed that it be known as the “Orr Walker Cup,” and to comply with the condition that it be for the annual South Canterbury Inter-Club cross country championship. A motion thanking Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., for his splendid gift, and his interest in the sport, was recorded in the minutes, Mr Walker to be asked to present the cup to the winning club. It was decided that an entry fee be charged, and that each runner run for his own club, the club with the first five men home to win the cup.

The following judges were appointed: Messrs J. A. Norrie, C. W. Cameron, D. Clark, E. D. Mcßae, Rev. W. Southward, Rev. C. W. Duncumb, and Mr R. Sinclair. Mr J. Fraser was appointed -timekeeper. Mr Cameron was asked to take charge of picketing the course, each runner to receive a card as he passes the picket at the farthermost part of the course. Mr A. Foden and Mr J. Freeman were appointed trail-layers. The management and selection committee will watch this event closely, as they desire to obtain South Canterbury’s best men to send to the Canterbury championships to be held in Christchurch on August 16th.
