LABOUR DEFEAT.
CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. The by-election for the City Council, caused by the death of Councillor Cooke, resulted:— A. A. McLachlan (Citizens’ Assn.) 9856 G. M. Thurston (Labour), 5824 C. S. Trillo (Independent) 913 The strength of the parties now on the Council is: Citizens 10, Labour 6, Independent 1. At the ordinary election the parties were: Citizens 8, Labour 8, Independent 1, and Labour, with the support of the Independent, had control.
