VERDICT REVERSED.
NEW LIGHT ON KARUNEDZE TRIAL. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright BERLIN, July 21. The Karunedze verdict, which in effect legally sanctioned counterfeiting as a political weapon, was to-day reversed by the Appellate Court, and Karunidze was sentenced to 34 months’ imprisonment. His confederates were sentenced to shorter terms and fined. A cablegram from Berlin on February, 11 said: There was a surprising end to the Karunedze trial. The three defendants were acquitted, and the Court ordered proceedings against the remainder to be abandoned. The Court declared that defendants were actuated by unselfish political motives and were entitled to the amnesty granted to political prisoners on the occasion of President Hindenburg’s eightieth birthday. The public prosecutor is asking for a re-trial. The newspapers express amazemeht and contemplate uneasily the conclusions to be drawn from the verdict. They ask whether political elements in Germany are at liberty to counterfeit the currency for the purpose of overturning the Government.
