Y.W.C.A.

DIRECTORS’ MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Board of the Y.W.C.A. was held on Tuesday. Present—Mmes Holdgate (in the chair), Benstead, Butcher, Hay, Raymond, Vincent, Washbourn and Misses Howell and Lynn. Mrs Holdgate welcomed Mrs Raymond as a new member to the Board.

It was reported that neither Mmes. Oddie or Evans would be able to accept appointment to sub-committees —and it was decided also to hold meetings in future on the third Mondays of the month.

Correspondence from various sources was received and recommendations adopted. Mrs Holdgate gave a very interesting report of the meeting of the National Board of the Y.W.C.A., which was held last month in Wellington, and to which she went as a delegate from the Timaru Branch. Discussions had taken place there on problems of training from the point of view of secretaries. Board and committee members, and general membership; on the sports policy of the Association; on methods of co-operation with the Y.M.C.A, and of work for boys and girls together, a memorandum in connection with this combined work being referred to the Girls’ Work Committee for discussion and recommendation.

Mrs Holdgate reported that Miss Jean Stevenson, a New Zealander, at present on the national staff of the Australian Y.W.C.A., was to be asked to take the place of Miss Ethel Law, M.A., who is to retire from the general secretaryship in order to take up an appointment in Canada next year. The report from the Girls’ Work Committee, giving an outline of club activities, was read by Mrs Butcher, and adopted. Miss Howell reported for the Membership and Finance Committee, and also for the House Committee, and a discussion was held as to plans for increasing the membership of the Association.

It was also decided that posters advertising the Y.W.C.A. Hostel should be placed in various workrooms if permission to do so could be obtained. Miss Lynn reported on the results of the girl citizens membership drive, and the numbers in clubs to date—there being 52 in girl citizen sections, 53 in senior clubs and 7 more in the basketball club, at total of 112 girls being catered for through club work. The attendance in girl club sections was .good, that in senior clubs not being so satisfactory. The club room was being made use of regularly, while the health programme was proving the most satisfactory yet tried. The Girls’ Council had appointed a finance committee which had met with the membership and finance committee of the Board during the month to discuss ways and means.
