“RECEPTION TO MR FORRES.”
FUNCTION THAT FAILED. On Saturday last, when the Prime Minister, the Hon. G. V/. Forbes, passed through Timaru to attend the funeral of the late Sir Joseph Ward, arrangements were made for him to be civically welcomed to Timaru when returning north. Accordingly the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough assembled at the railway station at 4.25 p.m. yesterday, ready to do honour to Mr Forbes. As the train drew into the station and came to a stationary position, the city fathers waited for the appearance of the Prime Minister. His non-appearance prompted Mr Angland to suggest boarding the Ministerial car at the rear of the train. When they approached the car an official on the train asked: “Whom do you want?” and Mr Angland replied, “Mr Forbes.” Imagine the surprise of those present when the same official said: "He is not aboard. He went through last night. Mr Taverner is here.” here.”
Mr Taverner chatted with the Mayor and Councillors till the train left on its northern journey, and the civic reception to the Prime Minister has been deferred till some future date.
