In finally checking the times and the handicaps in connection with the Temuka to Timaru road race, the Management Committee discovered that A. Craig, of the Timaru Anglican Harrier Club, should have been placed fourth in the sealed handicap. It has been decided to award this competitor a special prize.
Some doube appears to exist concerning the exact date of the opening of the Winchester School, the diamond jubilee of which is to be celebrated this year. -The school, then known as the Waihi Crossing School, was “ opened ” with a tea meeting and concert on October 21st, 1870. The fittings were not quite completed, and it was a week or two later before pupils were received. There were 16 applications for the post of teacher, and Mr Irvine, of Harewood Road School, was appointed. The teacher’s remuneration was £IOO per annum (£75 of which was guaranteed by the Government) , with school fees and house free. There was stated to be no risk of the school lacking pupils, as seven of the committee “ reckoned among them 49.” The chairman of the Building Committee, Mr Young, announced that the school opened with a debt of £65.
