LOST IN HURRICANE.
TAINUI’S CHIEF OFFICER DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. July 13. Swept from the deck by a wave during the height of a hurricane, the Chief Officer of the Shaw Savilf liner Tainui, Mr H. V. Seddall, was lost overboard on the night of July 4th, while the steamer was en route from Auckland to Southampton. News of the accident was brought by the Rotorua, which arrived yesterday from London. The two steamers were in the vicinity of Pitcairn Island when the hurricane occurred. Seafarers describe it as the worst in their experience. Owing to the blackness of the night and the furious sea, efforts to locate Mr Seddall failed. The third-class quarters on the Rotorua were flooded during the storm, and minor damage was caused.
