Mr A. E. A. Watkins, Borough Electrical Engineer, left on Saturday evening for Wellington to attend the Engineers’ and Electrical Supply Authorities’ Conference, which commences in Wellington on Tuesday. The board of managers of the Timaru Technical College, at their meeting on Saturday night, passed a vote of condolence with the family of the late Sir Joseph Ward in their bereavement. Advice has been received locally that Mr Ernest A. James, formerly of Temuka, died at Wellington on Friday. For many j'ears Mr James filled the office of secretary of the New Zealand Political Reform League, and recently retired owing to ill-health.

At a meeting of Reform Party supporters in the Central Otago electorate, held at Clyde on Saturday night, Mr Charles Todd was chosen as the Party’s candidate for the next election. Mr Todd, who opposed the Hon. W. B. Taverner for Dunedin South in 1928, accepted nomination. Mr W. G. Bums, Timami West School, has been appointed headmaster of Caversham School, Dunedin, as successor to Mr G. T. Palmer, who has been promoted to be inspector of Southland. At a meeting on Saturday, the South Canterbury teachers, by whom Mr Burns is held in high esteem, he was heartily congratulated on his promotion, and thanked for many services in his capacity as president of the Institute. Mr Burns will enter on his new duties early in September.
