PLENTY OF WORK
BUT LOW PAY. By Telegraph—Press Association GISBORNE, July 12. Reiterating his declaration in Parliament that there was plenty of work in country districts for unemnloyed single men, Mr W. D. Lysnar, M.P., at a meeting of 60 unemployed to-day, added that while this was true, farmers were in the position of having insufficient funds to make that work available at full rates of pay. He impressed on the men that it would be be"ter to meet farmers and accept work at what farmers could afford to pay. The meeting was openly hostile to man> of Mr Lysnar’s statements, and the Mayor (Mr Coleman), who presided, was unable to control a persistent flow of interjections. Mr Darton, borough engineer, said the Council had received splendid value from relief works, on which Public "Works officers had commented most favourably. “I have not had to sack one man on relief works,” he added. “In fact, I can say that Gisborne has been quoted throughout New Zealand for the good value it has got from relief works.”
