OBITUARY.

HENRY QUANE. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. July 11. Very general regret was felt in business and other circles in Christchurch at the announcement of the death of Mr Harry Quane. of the old-establish-ed firm of merchants of H. Quane and Co., which dates back over forty years. For the past year or two Mi* Quane did not enjoy the best of health, and recently had not been able to take a very active part in business. Mr Quane was a native of the Isle of Man and was born in 1856. and was educated at King William’s College, Isle of Man. In the earlier days of his firm Mr Quane personally visited Nelson and the W es t Coast. He was a prominent member of the Canterbury Charrjber of Commerce, and was president in 1904-5. Mr Quane was one of the strongest advocates of the completion of railway communication between Christchurch and the West Coast and the construction of the Arthur’s Pass tunnel. For many years he was chairman of the special committee of the Chamber of Commerce that deal with matters relating to the East and West Coast railway, and it was due largely to the energy and hard work he put in that the railway and tunnel proposals were brought to a successful issue. On many occasions he was one of the speakers on deputations to Ministers urging the more vigorous prosecution of that great national undertaking. He was a member of the Lyttelton Harbour Board in 1905. Since 1912 he was a non-official member of the South Island Representation Commission, the body that readiusts the electoral boundaries after each census. On this body Mr Quane did very valuable work. In 1912 Mr Quane - was made a Justice of the Peace. Mr Quane leaves a widow and a grown-up family of two sons and one daughter. The elder son is Mr Douglas Quane, of Sydney, and the younger Mr Cecil Quane, of Christchurch. The daughter is Mrs J. G. McMaster, of London.
