The expected visit of the British Rugby footballers to a special korero arranged for them by the Hastings Orphans Club last evening did not eventuate, the reason being that, owing to some confusion, the team did not know, according to their manager (Mr J. Baxter), that they were expected. They had been entertained till a very late hour after the Maori match on Wednesday, and the necessity of keeping fit precluded their acceptance of last evening's invitation. Over three hundred Orphans and their friends were present, and all were keenly disappointed. The original programme of entertainment for the visitors during their stay in Napier was submitted by the Hawke's. Bay Rugby Union to the New Zealand Rugby Union, who returned the draft with certain amendments, but the Hastings Orphans’ fixture had been allowed to stand. From the fact that changes had been made, it was assumed here that the New Zealand Union had submitted the programme to the visitors, and that the alterations were effected in accordance with their wishes, and that remaining engagements were approved by them. However, Mr Baxter stated last* evening that he had no knowledge of the Hastings appointment. To-night the Hawke's Bay Union decided to ask the New Zealand Union for an explanation of the misunderstanding.

Mr A. Kirkpatrick, Hastings, stated that the Orphans had gone to considerable expense and trouble to prepare the entertainment.

Mr J. W. Norrie (chairman) said the Union had sent the programme to the New Zealand Union for submission to Mr Baxter. On June 16th the New Zealand Union replied confirming the arrangements. That reply stated: “July 10—The whole team will attend the Hastings Orphans’ entertainment, but will leave early, in time to be in bed by 10 p.m.”

When the matter was referred to Mr Baxter on the team’s arrival here, he said - he matter was submitted to him, but it had been turned down.

Mr Norrie said his Union would take no responsibility for the arrangement not being carried out.

NEW ZEALAND TEAM IN AUSTRALIA.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 11. 10.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 11. The New Zealand League team for to-morrow will not be definitely chosen until the morning, owing to minor injuries to Stevenson, Trauvetter and Dobbs. It is known, however, that Dufty will go into, the three-quarter line, and Gregory will play at full-back. The weather has been fine all the week, and indications point to ideal conditions to-morrow. Officials on both sides are hoping for a 30.000 crowd to compensate for the smallness of last Saturday’s attendance due to bad weather.

COMPETITIONS TO RESUME TO-DAY. After a lapse of three weeks, the South Canterbury Rugby Union’s competitions will be renewed to-day. In the senior grade. Old Boys and Waihi will meet on No. 1 ground at Fraser Park, after High School and Old Boys juniors have provided what should be an attractive introduction. The preliminary match on No. 2 will be a third grade contest between Star and Old Boys, the main game on this area being the clash between Zingari and Star. Celtic are drawn to meet Temuka. at Temuka.

At present. Temuka are leading for the senior championship, by one point from Old Boys, their totals being 14 and 13 respectively. In the junior division, Old Boys and Point are on top with 14 points each, and there is a tie in the third grade between Pareora and Star, who are two points ahead of High School and Geraldine. In the fourth grade, Zingari have a lead of 4 points over Star A. and Old Boys, and in the fifth section Star claim a similar advantage over Geraldine and School A.
