PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 9. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. LATE SIR J. G. WARD. In the absence of the Leader (Sir T. T. Sidey), the Deputy Leader, Hon. R. A. Masters, moved a motion of appreciation of the late Sir Joseph Ward’s services, and of sympathy to his relatives. Mr Masters said Sir Joseph Ward had a wonderful record of service to the people. There were few people who had crowded more into their lives, and his life was an outstanding example to the youths of the country. In seconding the motion, Sir F. D. Bell said he had experienced both opposition and co-operation with Sir Joseph Ward, and both had taught him to appreciate the late statesman to the full. Sir Joseph’s opponents had always been ready to recognise his services to the Domfnion, and he could have had a seat in the Legislative Council long ago had he desired. He had made a great sacrifice when he joined the National Government, but never once had he allowed his political feelings to obtrude. The Hon. J. A. Hanan said Sir Joseph Ward had had a wonderful career. He was the possessor of an unconquerable spirit. He was knocked down frequently but he rose again to fight. His name was written indelibly on the pages of New Zealand’s history. The Hon. D. Buddo said Sir Joseph Ward had always put principles before expedients, and from that point of view he was probably the greatest Prime Minister New Zealand had ever had.
The Hon. Mr Fagan said he had always been impressed by Sir Joseph Ward's humane outlook. Sir Joseph had had a wonderful and full career, climbing from the humblest position in the land to the highest. The Hon. L. M. Isitt said Sir Joseph had been a clean man—clean in word and thought, and had had eager sympathy for these in trouble or difficulty. The Council adjourned until 22nd July.
