DANGEROUS BITUMEN
AFFECTED BY FROST. SEVEN MOTORS CAPSIZE. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 9. A severer irost than Wellington ia accustomed to occurred last night, and in consequence the bitumen on tne Hutt Road was in a slithery condition tins morning, with the result that between 6 o clock and 7.30 no fewer than seven motor vehicles got out oi control, and were capsized, two being lorries, one a butcher's light delivery Fortunately these accidents ‘were attended by only one case of serious injury, and no lives were lost. The injured man is named Lewis. He was a passenger in the butcher s van, and was taken to hospital. Apparently the hist accident was this of the delivery van It occurred about half a mile from the l>*tone railway crossing. The driver. L. R. Wilson, said the steering appeared to lock, and the van headed for the fence. He braked, and the van overturned, with Lewis underneath. The next victim was .\. liaynton, driving a tivc-seater car. wli-ch overturned. He saw a man holding up his hand to stop. He applied bis brakes and the car immediately turned round, struck a fence, and capsized. Neither the driver nor the passenger was hurt. Later a big American car came to grief at the same spot, and was badly smashed. In another part of the road a threeseater car lost the wheels on one side through skidding and striking a fence The other car overturned was of the baby type. Its hood suffered badly. Of the lorries, one was a meat waggon. It lay on its side, with shattered glass." The other was an empty coal lorry.
