UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
W AIM AT AIT AI CREEK DRAINAGB. GOVERNMENT AID GRANTED. The Mayor, Mr W. Angland, last evening informed the Borough Council that a telegram had been received from the Minister for Public Works granting the Council’s application for a £2 for £1 subsidv for the work of draining and straightening the Waimataitai Creek. This represented a saving of £6OOO to the ratepayers, and would in addition provide work for the unemployed in Timaru. The Mayor read the following telegram from the Minister: — “In reply to your telegram, the District Engineer reports the Council’s revised estimate for cutting a canal and straightening the Waimataital Creek is £11,589. inclusive of £7OOO for labour. A £2 for £1 subsidy on the estimated labour expenditure would amount to £4700, and the Government is prepared to contribute £2 for £1 on labour up to £4700, on condition that the work is commenced at the earliest possible date and the Council will provide work for Timaru unemployed during the next six months; and the Government is not to be called upon to provide work for resklents of Timaru between now and December 31st next." Councillor Hunt asked what wages would be paid on these relief works. The Mayor: The Council will decide that when the time comes.
