SOCIAL NEWS. i Mrs J. P. Peter, who has been a resi--1 j dent of Orari for some years, left on ' Friday for Kaikoura, where Mr and Mrs Peter are taking up their residence. Mr Peter will be leaving early this week. Mrs Peter was accompanied . by her sister, Mrs Haines, who is on a visit to New Zealand, from England. Mr S. R. Muff, Orari, chairman of the Orari Dairy Company, will leave for Dunedin to-mbrrow, where he will i attend the annual meeting of the South Island Dairy Association. Mr G. T. Reay, director of the same company, will accompany him. Mr and Mrs J. Minnis, Orari, left on Friday for Christchurch. Mr R. Taylor, Home Missioner for the Orari Presbyterian Church, has i returned from the north. His health is i much improved after his six weeks’ rest. I COLD WEATHER. Very cold weather has been experi- ) enced locally during the week. Mild frosts during the earlier part of the week were followed by dull days with biting cold winds, while the latter part of the week was marked by heavy ) frosts, 9 degrees being experienced on 5 Friday morning and 8 degrees on Saturday, though both days were beau- ) tifully fine. TENNIS CLUB. The annual meeting of the Orari . Tennis Club was held in the Orari Hall j. on Wednesday evening, when Mr S. R. [ j Muff (president of the Club) presided I over an attendance of eighteen memI bers. The annual report showed that the club had had a very successful season; in fact the best since its inception. In the Temuka Town and Country Assoj ciation Competition, the club had been . placed fifth. Other games had been , i played with surrounding clubs by the , i “B” team, with success. Several tour- , naments had been held during the seai son, these all being won by different members, three of them by new members this year. Weather had prevented the playing of the combined doubles i “Top of the Ladder” tournament. The committee had been very active during ; its term of office, and had run several dances for raising funds and as a result it had been enabled to have erected i a pavilion which had already proved a boon to players. court to eliminate the cracks which j spoilt the playing surface, and this | court was now in good condition. Other | improvements had also been carried out during the past eight months. The

Macdonald, Messrs W. Quirke, H. Killoh and T. Austin; club captain, Mr E. P. Chambers; vice-captain, Mrs D. M. Lamb; secretary and treasurer, Miss C. G. McQueen; assistant secretary, Mrs Lamb; committee, Mesdames W. Watson, E. P. Chambers, Messrs .L. Wood, D. M. Lamb, with power to add two more members; selectors and handicappers, Messrs E. P. Chambers. D. M. Lamb, and W. E. Cook; delegates to the Temuka Town and Country Tennis Association, Messrs E. P. Chambers and W. E. Cook; ladder committee, Mrs Chambers, Mr Chambers and Mr Lamb. It was decided that the subscription be the same as usual, and that the opening day of the season be left for the incoming committee to arrange. In order to raise funds for further improvements to the court, the committee were instructed to arrange dances during the playing of the doubles “Top of the Ladder tournament for the next season, and that the rules remain unaltered. It was resolved that next season the selection of teams for matches should be done on Monday and Tuesday evenings, players to then notify selectors of their ability to play, and that a member of the Selection Committee should accompany each visiting team. The meeting closed with votes of thanks to the retiring members and to the chair. REPAINTING SCHOOL. During the week a visit of inspection was paid to the Education Board’s property in Orari, in order to make preparation for the repainting of the school and schoolhouse.
