MILEAGE CENSUS.

RETURNS REQUIRED FROM MOTORISTS. By Telegraph—Press Association.. WELLINGTON. April 29. When owners of motor vehicles renew their licenses this year, they will be asked to suppfcr. as far as may be posible, information regarding the mileage run by their vehicles, (a) during the year ended 30th. April, and (b> during the life of the vehicle. This information, which, from one aspect, may be regarded as a quantitative measure of motor transport activity, is being sought by the Transport Department. It will be used in conjunction with other statistical data on shedding light on ramifications of motor transport in the Dominion, and will constitute one of the threads out of which an attempt will be made to weave what, for want of a better term, may be called a road transport balance sheet.

In making an announcement to this effect, the Minister of Transport (Hon. W. A. Veitch) states that every effort has been made to confine the information to what will be within the knowledge of every motorist, and that the information is being sought in a manner that will cause a minimum trouble to those furnishing it. The Government hopes, said Mr Veitch, that the motoring public will realise that the figures which are being sought on a purely voluntary basis, are essential if the transport problem is to be fully understood, and he feels sure that motorists will accord the Department every assistance possible.
