PROTEST LODGED.

STAR-CELTIC MATCH. CONSIDERATION DEFERRED. An alleged breach of the laws governing Rugby football in the match Star v. Celtic, which was played on Fraser Park on Saturday, and which was won by Celtic by 10 points to 9, formed the basis of a protest which was before the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union last night. The protest, which was lodged by the Star Club, was against the decision of the referee in allowing two points for a goal kicked by D. Fairbrother in the game with Celtic. The referee allowed the kicker to place the ball after a free charge had been allowed. The protest w r as under Law 25 (N.Z. Handbook). The Club asked that the goal be disallowed and the score be made to read, Star 9, Celtic 8. When the matter came up for consideration, Mr A. B. Rowlands asked if it would not be advisable to have the referee in attendance. The chairman (Mr D. Hertnon): "Is it necessary to have the referee present?” Voices: “Yes.” Mr A. B. Ilerdman then moved that the matter be held over until next Mlonday night, and that the referee be asked to be in attendance. The motion was seconded by Mr Rowlands. Mr W. J. Watson moved as an - amendment that the matter be discussed that night, if the referee could be in attendance. Mr H. H. Fraser said that he had been in conversation by telephone with the referee, and he would not be present that evening. Mr Watson then withdrew his amendment. Mr J. Roseveare said that he would like to see the matter fixed up during the week. A special meeting was fix'ed for Wednesday night, and the matter could be considered then. Some members pointed out that Wednesday night was not suitable for the special meeting, the question of a suitable night being discussed at length. • In the course of subsequent discus- • sion. Mr J. Harley said that he did not think it was to discuss the protest at the special meeting. Mr Fraser: “What difference does it make holding the matter over for a week?” Mr Roseveare: “The unsportsmanlike attitude of the club in bringing up such a paltry matter is what matters.” A voice: “It is no slur on the club.” Mr Roseveare: “The matter should be taken off the shoulders of the team concerned before they take the field next Saturday. The Star Club is appealing on a point of law.” The motion was then carried, Mr Roseveare dissenting.
