FLORAL SOCIETY
MEETING OF COMMITTEE.. A meeting of the Committee of the Timaru Floral Society was held on Thursday night. Present—Mr W. J. Hogg (chairman), Mesdames R. H. Rhodes, R. D. King. A. Wigley. W. C. Burns, F. L. Barker. W. J. Rooney, T. Segar, Messrs J. Moody, J. Rennie. J. Cleland, A. Thoreau, G. E. Knowles. A. S. Jones. In the absence of the secretary (Mr P. T. Knowles), Mr Thoreau acted as secretary. The meeting was called to further discuss arrangements in connection with a proposed chrysanthemum show, and Mr Hogg stated that at a previous meeting a committee had been appointed, with power to act. in the matter of securing a hall. The committee had met at Wesley Hall and discussed cost and dimensions of that hall in comparison with the Caroline Bay Hall. The committee had no recommendation to make, and it would be for the meeting to decide on the hall. Caroline Bay, Mr Hogg said, had a floor space of one thousand square feet more than Wesley Hall, but against this there was the difficulty in knowing whether there would be enough exhibits to fill Caroline Bay in such a manner as to do full justice to the display.
Mr Moody said the Society could be sure of at least ten exhibitors, and possibly this number could be doubled. In fixing a date for their show, Mr Moody considered full consideration should be given to the decorative side, as for this not much notice had been given. For their show he favoured Wesley Hall. He considered the show would be lost in Caroline Bay. although he saw no reason why the display should not be a large one.
The chairman said that Mr W. Bayliss (Christchurch) was prepared to judge and bring an exhibit, if the show was held on May 6. Mr Bayliss would judge in the following week, but would be unable to bring an exhibit.
The question of fixing dates for -the show was then discussed, and these were agreed -upon as May 13 and 14. These dates were fixed after full consideration had been given to the question of the decorative section of tne show.
It was further decided that the show take place in Wesley Hall.
Mrs A. G. Pitts (Waimate) was appointed judge in the decorative section.
On the motion of Mr Knowles, it was decided to add to the schedule a class for decorative tables of any flowers other than chrysanthemums. Inis decision was arrived at as the result of a donation to the Society’s funds by the Timaru Ladies’ Gardening Circle.
The meeting decided to arrange for a stall at the show from which sales of any class of flowers would be made. Mrs Rhodes was appointed to take charge of the stall. Mrs Burns gave notice to move at the annual meeting, that the title of the Society be changed to “Timaru Horticultural Society” instead of “Timaru Floral and Horticultural Society” as at present. The annual meeting was fixed for May 28.
