AUTOMOBILE ASSN.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Automobile Association was held on Thursday night. Present—Messrs J. C. Palliser (chairman), F. S. Shrimpton, A. P. Kelland. G. A. Bridges, T. Scott, W. T. Ritchie, and W. H. Orbell. The county clerk, Geraldine, wrote stating that tne suggestion of the executive that two domes be placed at Langford’s corner, Winchester, to regulate the traffic, was considered by the Council, but it was decided to paint white lines instead. This method should be effective. The Timaru Borough Council advised that Beswick Street and Cain's Terrace had been declared “one-way streets.” This no doubt would require a by-law, and steps were being taken accordingly. The secretary of the Canterbury Automobile Association (Mr J. Hawkes) wrote enclosing a letter from Mr J. Roy Smith, secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. The letter stated that during a recent tour in Otago, Mr Smith noticed that road signs, particularly in the vicinity of Lake Wanaka and Queenstown, in fact from Pukaki to Dunedin, via Wanaka and Queenstown, were not so adequate nor accurate as could be wished. He suggested that in view of the large number of Canterbury motorists who used the road some representation should be made to the Otago Motor Club to have signs in the area brought up-to-date.

The president stated that the portion of the highway under the South Canterbury Association’s jurisdiction was satisfactorily posted, and it was decided to advise the Canterbury Association to.this effect.

The minutes of the. half-yearly meeting of the S.I.M.U. were considered. A South Canterbury remit introduced by Mr W. T. Ritchie, “That major road traffic should have * preference over minor road traffic,” was seconded by Mr J. C. Palliser. Mr Ritchie quoted regulations in Canada and America in support of the remit, and said that there were stop signs on all side streets when entering a main tnoroughfare. It was generally considered that the public were now well educated to the present “off side” rule, which was effective, and after a long discussion the motion was lost. The chairman reported on the business of the meeting, and delegates were thanked for their attendance. In reply to an inquiry from the local executive, the Marlborough A.A. stated that their office was open during the Christmas and New Year period except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Lengthy particulars of the Otago Motor Club’s free road patrol service were received from the South Island Motor Union.

It was decided that the Finance Committee go into the question of appointing a patrolman on the lines of the Otago Motor Club.

Messrs D. McPhee, F. Egan. S. Gill. W. Blair, R. Stark. L. P. Brown. M. Williams. 11. H. Brown. H. J. Stuart, and M. H. Ricnards were elected new members.

The secretary said that as a result of the recently-instituted membership campaign, seven replies accepting membership had been received. The meeting considered that so far results had been very satisfactory.
