TEMUKA.

OBITUARY. After an illness extending over a lengthy period, there passed away at 2 a.m. yesterday, a well-known figure in Temuka in the person of John Sunckell Lee, who has been associated with the town and district since his infancy. Deceased, who was the third son of the late Henry Lee, arrived in Temuka an infant in arms 45 years ago, his father being engaged successively as licensee and proprietor of the Crown and Royal Hotels. John, when quite a young man, was engaged as a grocer to Mr Thomas Buxton, and later engaged in business on his own account as a grocer in a shop now occupied by Mrs F. Sanders. This he disposed of, and established the cordial business in Temuka which bears his name and was carried on by him up to the time of his death, except for a short period when the business was leased during his absence at the war. He was a member of various sports bodies, and held office in most of them. He was twice president of the R.S.A., and held the position of treasurer of this body up to the time of his death. It was during his presidency that the soldiers’ obelisk in the Domain w'as unveiled by Lord Jellicoe. He was a member of the Temuka Borough Council for a term. He was also closely identified with the Milford Lagoon Association being a member of the committee up to the time of his death. He was a member of the Temuka Golf Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Winchester, No. 1737 E.C. He was of a very generous disposition and no deserving appeal to him was ever made in vain.
