The obvious sincerity of a remark made at a meeting of the Peninsula County Council purged it of all semblance of innuendo. Yet it served to prove how easy it would be to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Mr W. Bowles had thanked tne councillors for the part they had played in having the new street lighting installed at Portobello, and in the course of his reply the chairman (Councillor Macandrew) said it was gratifying to know that the people were pleased with what had been done. “The council does not receive many compliments. * he added. "Yes, yes, I quite understand that," answered Mr Bowles ingenuously before he went on with his address.

A Wanganui resident, who recenttly motored to Auckland and back, told a reporter that he was surprised to see the large extent of country badly infested with ragwort between Hamilton and Te Kuiti. He says there are hundreds of acres of land practically covered with the weed, and the strange part of it, he added, is that it is mostly Crown land that is so infested. It may be mentioned that experiments have recently been made at Mamaku to eradicate ragwort by spraying with sodium chlorate, and encouraging results are said to have been obtained. The results, however, need to be co-related with those of other experiments elsewhere and further trials made before anything more definite can be stated.
