TIMARU WOOL SALE

FINAL AUCTION OF SEASON. PRICES DOWN ON FEBRUARY SALE. The final and clearing-up wool sale of the season in South Canterbury was held in the Theatre Royal on Saturday morning, about sixty buyers operating on a catalogue of 3381 bales. The in- ' dividual offerings, in the order of sell- t ing, were as follows: Bales. ] N. M. and A. Co., Ltd 1039 Pyne. Gould, Guinness, Ltd. .. 599 ! C.F.CA., Ltd 586 Dalgety and Co., Ltd 1014 N.Z. Loan Co., Ltd 143 Total 3381 The sale commenced punctually at 9 o'clock, and concluded at 10.15, the j disposal of over 3000 bales in an hour ! and a quarter considering there were ! few big lots, representing smart selling. ' The catalogue was a fairly represent- | ative one, and included a good pro- | portion of Merino wools, which, however, were ordinary top-making and scouring lots. The bench of buyers was representative of countries, as well ' as Dominion mills, speculators, and scourers. Competition was fairly keen, espec- | ially for the better class lots, Brad- j ford and Continental buyers being the chief operators. Compared with those I at the recent sale at Wanganui, prices I may be quoted from £d to 2d up for j lialf-breds, and from id to id up for ! the coarser bred wools. Comparing Saturday’s sale with the last auction ! in Timaru in February, however, prices for half-breds may be quoted at from ! id to 3d down, while crossbreds were I from id to id easier. The merino wools offered on Satur- j day were stated to be rather a shabby , lot, and little or no change in values i was recorded. The opinion was ex- I pressed that the quantity of wool I which went to auction at the sale was j disappointing, and that a large quan- | tity must be held over, growers evidently hoping for a rise in values next season.

Conversing with a “Herald” reporter after the sale, a prominent auctioneer stated that he was certain that growers were very disappointed with prices obtained throughout the season, for they were a long way below the cost of production. Bidding was brisk for the first few lots offered in the opening catalogue, and in the sixth lot offered, 4 bales of fine 2-bred ewe, on behalf of Mr W. Bain, Tycho, the top-price for this line was secured. Towards the end of the sale, Dalgety and Co., secured a similar bid for eight bales of 2-bred ewe on behalf of Dr Hargreaves, Kakahu. Half-breds in the early part of the sale were firm at from 8d to 92d, but before the National Mortgage catalogue was concluded, half-breds reached the limit of lid. This price was obtained for 18 bales, offered on account of Mr T. D. McKenzie, Waihaorunga. The firm also set the range for quarter-bred, securing 9d for four bales on account of Mr H. E. Cameron, of Omarama. For Corriedales, also, they secured the top price of 10id, this being a line of eight bales on behalf of Mr J. McCormick, Hinds. The tone of the cross-bred market was fairly even up to the time Dalgety and Co.’s auctioneer took the stand, when with the offering of lot 19, nine bales on behalf of Mr J. H. Blue, of St. Andrews, a sale was effected at B£d. Merinos also showed an advance at this period to 9£d, this figure being secured for six bales submitted by Mr J. Pringle, Cattle Valley. A fairly good clearance was effected, the percentage of passings being small. Prices Realised. Some of the best prices obtained were as follows: National Mortgage and Agency Co.
