TEMUKA.

RUN DOWN BY CAR At about 7 o’clock on Saturday evening, Mr T. Eagleston was wheeling his bicycle along King Street. When in the vicinity of Ewan Road, he was run into by a car driven by Mr J. Priddle, of Orton, who was travelling in the same direction. Fortunately Mr Eagleston escaped injury, but the bicycle was badly damaged. COURT STATISTICS. During the quarter ended March 31, there were 72 cases entered in the plaint book in Temuka, the amount sued for being £B3l/3/3. For the corresponding period last year, the figures were 29, and £39/4/4. Fifteen (10) judgment summonses were issued, and 1 (0) warrant of committal; 91 (65) summonses were served by the bailiff; 7 (6) by registered post, and 1 (3) warrant was executed. There were 52 (47) criminal cards, and the total amount of civil fees paid was £6O/14 (£36/5/-). The fines paid into Qourt totalled £3B/15/- (£26/3/-). MAORI CONCERT. The annual concert of the Maori concert party under the direction of the Rev. A. Seamer, superintendent of the Methodist Maori Missions, took place in the Dominion Theatre on Friday evening. Tne party, comprised of only eight members, demonstrated that as part-singers, soloists, instrumentalists or entertainers, they were collectively or individually Maori artists of the first flight. Haunting melodies, spirited hakas, fascinating poi dances, talented solos, instrumental items, interesting information of the old-time Maori —were features of a splendid entertainment. The programme opened with the weird “Karanga” of one tribe welcoming another, an education to the audience, since this custom is riot common in the South Island.

The Rev. A. Blakemore, in a short address offered a welcome to the Rev. Mr Seamer and his party. This was acknowledged with a weird chant of tne Maori.

Te Ako Pihawa, in thanking Mr Blakemore in the Maori tongue, said that the party was comprised of representatives of the great tribes of the Dominion.

Tne oldest of the Maori “pao,” “Pa to hau e wini raro,” was followed by the “Hongi" (the hand-shaking salutation of the Maori) between Mr Blakemore and his party and the entire Maori party. Te Wi Perehana Nikora, of the Ngati Raukawa tribe (who has given items in this town since 1915) demonstrated that his wonderful tenor voice had, if anything, improved in richness, when he gave “Home, Little Maori, Home.” Waka Taituha, of the Taranaki tribes, gave the tribal chant of his people. Miss Rangi Tawhai of the Ngapuhi tribe, North Island, sang the well-known “E Pari Ra.” A poi dance, with all its fascinating rhythm, proved most popular.. Miss Taka Ropata, of the Ngaitahu tribe (Canterbury), rendered the Maori love song, “Tahi nei taru kino.” and resopnse to an encore, sang “Haerere ra, e hine” (“Farewell, Dear Maiden”). Miss Mori Erihana, of the Ngaipahi tribe (Otago), rendered “Waita Poi,” and as an encore, gave the ever-popular “Pokare Kare Ana.” An excellent example of the difference between Polynesian and English melodies was afforded in the Maori rendition of the hymn, “Jesus, Lover of Peace” (Tama ’ Ngakau Maire”). Miss Irene Karenara (Grennell) (representing the Maoris of the Chatham Islands), sang Hill’s “Waiata Maori. ’ “Annie Laurie” was given as an encore. Hoani Werata, representative of the Ngaititoa tribes of Wellington, played “The Polynesian Lament” on the steel guitar. The Rev. Mr Seamer thanked the audience for their excellent reception of the party’s efforts. He was specially grateful to the hosts and hostesses of the party, who had thrown their homes open to them.
