WAIMATE.

MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Magistrate’s Court, Waimate, on Saturday morning, before Mr Geo. Dash. J.P., a female first offending inebriate was convicted and discharged. Defendant, who pleaded guilty, was advised by the Bench that a repetition of the offence would probably mean gaol. THE WEATHER. The absence of rain for many weeks past is being seriously felt amongst the farming community in the Waimate district. The usual verdure of the pasture is non-existent, and as a result a shortage of feed for stock over the winter months is anticipated. The turnip crops, which gave promise of a liberal yield, have, owing to the absence of moisture, gone completely off. and the lookout is serious, owing to both swedes and soft turnips having gone “woody’’ for want of rain. Paddocks which have been shut off for hay also have failed to yield the customary growth, and in this direction the man on the land is faced with a further difficulty. Light rain which fell on Saturday night was the first experienced for a considerable time, and was wholly inadequate, hardly sufficient moisture falling to lay the dust. Unless a good soaking rain comes in the immediate future farmers will be faced with a more dreary prospect for winter than has been the case for many years. MARIST FOOTBALL CLUB. The annual meeting of the Marist Football Club was held in St. Patrick’s Hall. The president (Mr D. Keyes) occupied the chair in the presence of a large attendance of members. Mr Keyes stated that the balance sheet showed the club to be in a healthy financial position, and the membership list was in a buoyant state. Congratulations were due to the senior team on winning the knock-out competition last season. Mr Keyes said that at the commencement of last year prospects for the club did not appear altogether bright, but as the season advanced better combination had resulted in the club's representatives beating both the leading teams in the Sub-Union competition. , Congratulations were due to Mr L. Foley for having gained representative I honours. The club’s bantams had | turned out practically every week, and had given an exhilarating display, which had been highly appreciated by : the public. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Rev. Father O'Connor: president. Mr D. Keyes; vicepresident, Mr T. Twomey; club capi tain. Mr J. Blackaby; secretary, Mr P. ; Hansen; treasurer, Mr P. Convery; delegates to Sub-Union. Messrs V. ! Thomson and J. Flanagan; grading 1 committee, Messrs V. Thomson and J. Blackaby; general committee, Messrs L. George, P. McKinnon, D. Patterson, R. Leonard, J. Ryan junr., J. Lundon. i It was decided to enter senior and ! junior teams in the competition. ' The meeting decided to circulate ! a subscription list for the assistance i of a player who had been incapacitated I and put to considerable expense during J last season. BOXING ASSOCIATION. Patterson, R. R. Clear, , and the secretary (Mr W. F. George). Cyril McCarthy, Auckland, wrote | stating that he would be willing to j meet any featherweight for a small purse. ' F. Fraer. I Kid Smith, Westport, stated that he I was prepared to meet Griffiths, or the : winner of the Hurne-Taylor fight, for 1 the bantamweight title, and would re- | quire only a reasonable purse. S. Brooks, Fairlie, advised that he is • willing to meet either G. Wright j (Christchurch) or C. Brosnahan (AshI burton). | The applications were referred to the i incoming committee. The Christchurch Amateur Boxing j and Sports Club wrote that they were j holding a tournament in the near ! future, and inquiring if there were ally I good class amateurs in South Canter - j bury. j The secretary was instructed to inj form the Club that schools of boxing | were conducted by Messrs H. Gunn i (Timaru) and E. Parker (Temuka). i The statements of receipts and exj penditure for the Cleverly-Campbell professional contest showed an even balance. The attendance at the fight had been a record for any tournament held by the Association. | Prior to the conclusion of the meetI ing, Mr Bray said as this would be the I last meeting before the annual meet- ! ing, he would like to record his I appreciation of the work done by the ! Committee during the year. Their support had been invaluable, and it had been a pleasure to preside over so capable an executive. The recent j big fight had been an outstanding I success, mainly owing to the efficient ! work of the executive officers. ; Special votes of thanks were passed 'to Messrs Sullivan and Nelson for ' extra work done, and to the secretary j for the capable manner in which he had discharged the duties of his office. We have a Client with £6OO cash who i desires to purchase a farm of about j 175 acres as a going concern. Reply to i Forbes Wallace, Box 47, Waimate.
