TRENTHAM MEETING OPENS THIS WEEK. VETERAN MARKKSMEN ENTERED. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON. February 22. The National Rifle Association’s annual meeting will open at i Trentham on Thursday next. Present indications are that there will be a large number of young shots taking part, many of whom had never previously competed at Trentham. A sprinkling of the old hands will be again in evidence. , Previous Belt winners who will be present are:— Colonel G. R. Smith (1894); Rifleman R. J. King (1903 and 1909); Lieutenant W. Duncan (1909); Rifleman Roots (1911, 1922 and 1927); Rifleman F. H. James (1913); Captain W. N. Masefield (1914 and 1929); Rifleman H. V. CroxI ton (1920); Captain H. Simmonds i (1924); and Rifleman A. Caldwell | (1926). Among the “old diehards” who intend to be present might be mentioned Rifleman “Tam” Frazer, Kaitaingata, who has been a regular competitor at Trentham for nearly 40 years; Rifleman H. E. Humphries, Hastings; Rifleman J. Brydon, Kaiapoi; Rifleman F. Nelson, Christchurch; Rifleman W. T. Facer, Invercargill; Lieutenant J. F. Atkinson, Auckland; and Captain A. Neilson, Napier who is the present North Island champion. A new departure has been made this I year in the early stages of the proj gramme. In previous years the bullsi eye shooting had commenced with the Opening Match, seven shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards, but this year, after the service matches have been disposed of, a series of matches to be known as the Irqperial Aggregate will be fired. In the Imperial Aggregate, which does not count for the belt, the ranges are 300 and 50 yards, for the match will individual matches of 660, 900 and 500 j yards. ; TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the Timaru Defence Rifle Club held its weekly : shoot for the Nicholas Cup with five | other prizes for the five men. The : conditions were the usual service • shooting.* Rifleman C. Blackwood was the winner of the cup with the creditable score of 124, Rifleman Bradshaw ’ with 120 being second. The best shooting of the day w ? as put up by Rifleman H. Hopkins ( who got 49 out of a possible 50 at 200 yards in 45 seconds. ’ The leading scores are as follows: ’ Rifleman C.
