AUSTRALIANS DEFEAT AUCKLAND. VISITORS TOO STRONG IN DOUBLES. By Telegraph—Press Aacoclatlon. AUCKLAND, February 22. The most startling tennis seen in Auckland since the Davis Cup was played for here in 1920, was provided in the contest between the visiting Australians and the Auckland provincial team of eight players. F. E. Kalms was by far the most outstanding, and he played tennis of a quality rarely seen in this country. After two days’ play, the Australians w 7 on by eight matches to four. Honours in the singles were equal, but none of the doubles was won by Auckland. Results: — Singles. F. E. Kalms (Australia) beat E. j L. Bartjeet (Auckland), 6-3, 6-3. Dr. J. T. Laurenson (Auckland) beat W. E. Teague (Australia), 6-3, 6-3. C. Sproule (Australia) beat N. G. Sturt (Auckland), 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. A. C. Stedman (Auckland) beat C. Donohue (Australia), 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Doubles. Kalms and Teague beat Bartleet and Laurenson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Sproule and Donohoe beat Sturt and Stedman, 6-4, 9-7, 7-5. The Anthony Wilding Memorial I Shield challenge match, Canterbury ! (challengers) against Wellington ! (holders), was concluded on the Wellington Association’s courts at Mira- ’ mar, in fine weather.
