Association was held at Temuka yesterday afternoon, there being present—Messrs G. Fletcher (president), Geo. H. Patrick, G. W. Armitage, R. A. Dixon, J. Wordsworth, F. E. South, L. A. Nicholas, A. Bain, D. Bain, W. J. Lyon, E. Winmill, F. Charles, R. Maddren, J. C. Bisdee, A. J. Davey, T. Lewis, J. C. South, L. J. Grant, F. W. Tarbotton, W. F. Evans, George Ward, D. H. Paterson, J. F. Hayhurst, G. B. Cartwright, and the secretary, Mr John Kennedy.

The president referred to the recent death of the late Mr Geo. Thomson, father-in-law of the vice-president (Mr W. F. Evans), and moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to the widow and family. He moved also that a motion of sympathy be passed with the relatives of the late Major H. Hayhurst. Both motions were carried. The nineteenth annual report congratulated members on the successful results attained last year. The gate receipts were £l6 better than last year, and must be considered satisfactory as the weather in the morning was foggy and threatening. The afternoon, however, turned out fine, and was all that could be desired, practically all other receipts showing an increase. The jshow was considered by a number of (people to have been held rather late (in the year. The Association should try and stabilise the date if possible. The exhibits in practically every section were of a high standard. The light and draught horse sections were outstanding. The cattle and sheep sections were improved in numbers and quality, and competent judges considered the past show one of the best balanced yet held. The Committee felt that the success attending the recent Show was in a large measure due to the supporters who contribute so generously to the prize fund. This year, the Association was faced with heavy expenditure in replacing cups won outright. They were fortunate, however, to have received from members substantial donations towards replacing the light horse cup. Mr J. C. Bisdee replaced the draught horse cup, and Mr J. Wordsworth and Mr J. Kennedy the grain and seed cup. New cups were provided by the following: Meat Exporters, for sheep section; Woolbrokers’ and Stock Auctioneers’ Association, sheep section; Licensed Victuallers’, miscellaneous; J. C. South and F. E. South, fruit and vegetables; Sutton and Co., roots. The Committee expressed thanks to all contributors. A good deal of improvement was made on the grounds this year. The new loading bank proved a great boon in handling stock, and was favourably commented on by exhibitors. The additional windows in the produce shed had overcome the complaint of shortage of light where the grain and seeds were exhibited, and further additions were made to the cattle pens. It was pleasing to find that the Committee was able to pay for these Improvements out of this year’s revenue. The balance sheet showed the principal receipts to be:—Gates £l7l/10/-; members’ subscriptions £118; donations £164/11/-; entry fees £142/1/-; rents £55/10/-; ground space £2l/6/-; sideshows £18; catalogues £l9/3/-; advertising £l4; interest £lB/1/5. Expenditure—Prize money £300; new cups and engraving £7O/3/-; rent £3O; luncheons and refreshments £27/3/-; printing and advertising £97/0/3; improvements £73/12/2. The Association’s balance amounted to £447/4/9, and the total assets (after waiting off ten per

cent, depreciation) totalled £9OO/4/9. There was an average of about £3O of outstanding subscriptions carried forward each year. The Committee desired to express cordial thanks to the Press, for reports during the year; to the judges, class stewards, Committee and all who in any way assisted in the promotion of the show and the welfare of the Association.

Mr Lyon said that the Association affairs were in a highly satisfactory condition, and this was mostly due to the energetic way in which the president and secretary had worked during the past year. Mr Armitage said that the credit balance was about the same as last year, but against that they had added £IOO to the value of their assets. Mr W. F. Evans congratulated the Association on its excellent position, and agreed, as other members had said, that a great deal of this was due to the president and secretary. Mr South said that no doubt the Association had a good president and secretary, but they were favoured with a hard-working Committee. The president said there was no doubt that the Committee was one of the best that the Association had ever had. He felt that he must specially thank Mr Maddren, chairman, and members of the Grounds Committee, who had been at everyone’s beck and call, and had carried out their various duties so admirably. He paid a tribute also to the work of the secretary, and said that no man need be afraid to take the chair when Mr Kennedy was acting in his present capacity. The past year had been a pleasure to him in every respect, and he had much pleasure in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet. Mr W. F. Evans seconded the motion, which was carried without further discussion. The following new members were elected:—Mrs George Fletcher; Messrs A. Lowrie, M. Brophy, J. C. Hayhurst, and J. M. Little. On the motion of the retiring president, and Mr A. Bain, Mr W. F. Evans was unanimously elected president of the Association. Mr Evans expressed his sincere appreciation of the honour conferred on him. He had been connected with the Association for many years, and he knew that it was unnecessary to ask them for their assistance during the coming year, as it had always been one of the Association’s virtues to be loyal to their president. The present high position of the Association had, to a great extent, been brought about by the cordial relations which had always existed among the members. Other officers were elected as follows:—Patron, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P.; president, Mr W. F. Evans; vicepresident, Mr D. E. Lewis; treasurer, Mr G. W. Armitage; auditor, Mr F. A. It was also decided that the future shows be held on the last Thursday in March. I General. Mr Charles suggested that one set of numbers should be used for the light horse class, as the present system was very misleading.—Agreed to. Mr J. C. South said that everyone had been praising the secretary, and lie would suggest that instead of the present system of giving a bonus to the secretary, it would be more advisable to increase his salary to £BS per annum. Mr Lyon seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mi' Charles spoke of the great growth in the number of motors parked in the grounds, and said that the parking grounds were becoming congested. The matter was referred to the Grounds Committee. In answer to Mr South, the secretary stated that the cup for the cattle classes would have to be replaced before next season. On the motion of the president, hearty votes of thanks were passed to the retiring president, and to the Press. PERSONAL.
