STARS AT PLAY IN U.S.A. (United Press Association —By Electrls Telegraph—Copyright. > NEW YORK, August 22. At Forest Hills, Mrs Mallory (U.S.A.) defeated Miss Betty Nuthall (England) 6-3, 6-3. Miss Helen Jacobs (England) defeated Miss Mary Greef (Kansas City), 0-2, 6-2. Mrs Watson (England) defeated Miss Cross. Miss Helen Wills (U.S.A.) defeated Mrs Mitchell (England). PLAY DESCRIBED. In the first three games, in the first set, Mrs Mitchell took only three points, and was simply overwhelmed by the terriffle driving of Miss Wills. The second set was a virtual repetition of the first, and the match took only 22 minutes. Mrs Watson’s superbly earned victory over Miss Cross, was a demonstration of a player holding off against an opponent, whose forcing shots were driving her into errors, and then returning to take victory on her own terms'.. The Englishwoman lost the first set under the attack, which she seemed unable to weather, but in the second settled down to display accuracy which gained her six games in a row, and left behind her opponent weary. Although Mrs Watson was behind in the final set. her opponent was excessively tired and was unable to deal with her accurate pace, and the English woman ran out in the last four games. Mrs Mallory's victory over Miss Nuthall was as sensational as it was unexpected. The American setting a terriffic pace, overcame the English girl in the surprisingly short time of 38 minutes, in a match that seemed filled with the longest and most breathtaking rallies. She raked her opponent with forehand and backhand drives that kept Miss Nuthall running defensively along her base line, or retreating disastrously before balls spinning at her feet if she advanced to meet them. Miss Nuthall, in the second set stood 40-30 in the ninth game, and for a moment seemed likely to stave off defeat, but Mrs Mallory was driving fiendishly, and settled the match in the last and longest of rallies.
