FIFTH TEST MATCH DRAWN.

South Africa v. England. DAY OF HIGH SCORING. (United Press Association—-By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, August 20. The final cricket Test, England v. South Africa, was drawn. Achieving the record Anglo-African Test score of 492 for eight wickets, after losing three wickets for 20, South Africa changed the whole aspect of the struggle, compelling England to fight for a draw. The Home team rose to the occasion, dissipating the visitors’ hopes of an innings victory, to prevent which England had to score 234 in four hours. Africa, with five wickets in hand, were 25 runs ahead when play was resumed. There was an excellent attendance, and the weather was perfect. Cameron scored at the rate of a run a minute, including 10 fours, until he gave Freeman a catch. Morkel, though not aggressive, employed effective drives. Thirty-six in fours formed a substantial part of MacMillan’s well-made 50. Deane, realising that he had nothing to lose, then declared. Hobbs, who, with Sutcliffe, opened for England, skied the ball in attempting a pull, and Vincent caught him at short slip when he was apparently set. Thereafter Sutcliffe and Hammond brought the score to 264 without further loss. The critics who accused Deane of overboldness in putting England in first now admit that his tactics were justified. Following are the scores: England. First Innings. Hobbs, c Quinn, b MacMillan .... 10 Sutcliffe, c Owen-Smith, b Vincent 104 Hammond, st.
