CROSS-COUNTRY RACE.

The first cross-country race held by the Timaru Harrier Club, was run on Saturday afternoon, under ideal weather conditions. A trail had been previously laid, and pickets stationed at different points along the course, which enabled the runners to have an uninterrupted run. The course was approximately three miles, and the country was exceedingly rough and slippery, and the times show that it was a creditable performance. The following are the results: M. AVatson (3min); time 17min. 5 3sec 1 A. Harper (3Jmin.); time 17min. 58sec 2 AV. Campbell (3min.); time ISmin. 14sec 3 K. Marshall (3rnin.); time lilmin 31sec 4 AV. Smith (lmin.); time 20min. 2Gsec 5 E. Firkin (J min.); time 21min. 22sec 6 J. Freeman (scr); time 21min. 37sec 7 AV. Ramsay (2Jmin.); time 22min. 2scc 8 Tho following also finished in the order in which they are placed: K. Bnrasdcn 9, C. Henderson 10, F. Hay 11, J. Healey 12. On the return journey K. Davies and R. Seaton withdrew. Fastest time went to the winner, M. AA r atson, who ran a good race, doing the journey in 20min. 53see. AV. Campbell, who started from the same mark as the winner, secured second fastest time, taking 21sec. longer. The committee wish to thanlc the following for assisting to make the event as successful as it proved:-—. Messrs A. Fraser, E. G. Cliffin, J. A. Norrie, AV. Ramsay, J. H. Healey, A. Foden, E. Firkin, A. Caithness, and L. and J. J. Freeman; also those in charge of the Boys’ High School for use of dressing sheds and grounds.
