CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. A meeting of the Council of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held last evening. Present —Messrs It. B. Bell (president), W. G. Irwin, E. Porter, B. L. Blodorn, ,J. Anstev, It. D. Halstead, P. B. Foote, W. H. Orbell, W. T. ltitchio and A. M. Nicholson. The secretary stated that on making inquiries from the postmaster ho had been informed that mails coming from Christchurch by the night goods train were sorted into the boxes at nine o’clock every morning. The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce wrote regarding the railway winter time-table; and asking if it was considered advisable to arrange a conference of chambers to discuss the quostion. . „ , Mr Halstead stated that in all probability the Mararoa would shortly be coming on the ferry service while the Maori was undergoing repairs, hi that case an early train would not ho alto--gether possible. The Dunedin Chamber was more concerned with the time-table between Dunedin 'and Invercargill, and it was just questionable whether Tiinaru was interested. Mr Irwin said that the Department were attempting to run the railways on profitable linos, and were to bo commended upon their attitude. It was resolved that the Dunedin Chamber be advised' that in this Chamber’s opinion nothing further could be gained by holding a conference. ’ It was resolved that the reports on the motor omnibus regulations arid hydro-electric power bo approved: and submitted to a general meeting for discussion. On the motion of Mr P. B. Foote, it was resolved that -she Chamber undertake to enter objections on behalf ol : ratepayers who considered their valuations were too high. Tt was further resolved that any y ressary action bn left in the hands of the secretary and Mr P. B. Foote.
