HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. . MARRED BY RAIN. It was exceedingly hard luck for those who had worked up a comprehensive programme for the Waimate District High School’s inaugural' sports day to have the function spoilt by wet weather. A thin drizzle allowed signs of clearing at noon and it . was decided to carry out the programme, but just as tho first event was about to be started the rain came down more vigorously than before, the attendance thus being considerably affected. However, officials and competitors braved the elements, and seventeen out of the twonty-one scheduled events were got off, the regaining four being held over runtil Saturday morning. The sports master (Mr. J. L. Menzies), who initiated the function, had the wholehearted support of numerous townspeople, and it would be safe to say that, had<;the day been fine, the attendance would have been. • -;fn the vicinity of 1000. Mr Menizies had tho close co-operation of Mr T. E. Parry in mapping out the programme, : . and they, together with, an enthusiastic band of willing helpers, are -to be warmly (congratulated on setting' the ball rolling in a direction that cannot but fail to meet with tho approval, of those interested in the physical’ development of the children. The general feeling is that the 'gathering should be made an .annual one, and if this ib done there is no doubt that it will be well-supported by the public. Yesterday’s events resulted as follows:—
