MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. A general meeting of the South Canterbury Association was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs B. It. Macdonald (chairman), W. Ditchfield, W. Grant, J. Marriott, G. Davies, C. Gillies, and A. E. Izzard (secretary). The New Zealand Cricket Council advised that several challenges had been received for the Hawke Cup, but a definite date for the South Canterlmry cliallenge could not be given at present. The secretary stated that he had received a telegram that day stating that South Canterbury had been allotted holiday dates, January 1 and 2. The chairman said that al] knew the worth of their secretary, and he had gone to a lot of trouble in connection with the Hawke Cup, having drawn up a detailed programme. All that was needed was for them to carry the programme through. Tile secretary added that nominations for players to make the trip had only been fair, but there would be sufficient to get a team from. The selector had asked that if sufficient nominations were received a match “representatives” versus “the rest” should be played on Saturday next, in order to give tho team a chance of playing together. The suggestion was briefly discussed, and it was decided to bold a trial match next Saturday, all senior games to lie suspended. Junior and third grade games were to be carried on as usual. Air Ditchfield characterised it as unfair to hold a. trial match, for they were catering for th e few. The majority had to stand on the bank, and there had been too little cricket already this season. Air Grant said the best team had to be sent away, and cricketers would have to make some sacrifice. Tile Timaru Boys’ High School wrote asking for the used the Park wicket oil Monday and Tuesday next for their annual match with AVaitaki Boys’ High 'file secretary submitted a report, drawn up by' the sub-committee appointed to deal with gala, day, to be held in March next. The report embodied side-shows, stalls and competitions of various kinds. The town clubs would be actively interested, the country clubs to assist by catering for goods for the stalls. It was also suggested that the Schools’ Sports Association be approached and asked to run a sports’ programme on that day. A dance and euchre party was also suggested for the evening. The Old Boys and Star Chibs wrote complaining of tbe stale ol the junioi wickets, particularly that on Anzac Square. It was pointed out that last week two serious accidents occurred, and several players received minor injuries. , . , , It was explained that the wicket wn« set down on a had piece of turf, and the ball rose almost every time. Mem.iors pointed out that the wicket had not been watered for some time, hrj- had it been cut properly. The roller had not been put on the wicket either. No complaints were received regarding the Park or Caledonian wickets. Tt was decided to bring the matter under the notice of file groundsmen. 'i'lie Timaru Friendly Society advised that tlic society’s annual picnic was liein* held at oamaru on January L", and asked the Association to postpone any fixtures for that chile.
