MOST VIOLENT SHOCKS.
Recorded in World Centres. NO NEWS FROM STRICKEN LAND. Reuter’s Telegrams. Received 8.40 p.m., June 27. LONDON, June 26. Most violent earthquake shocks were reported in several of the world centres. At Faenzas (Italy), the record of the shock at Bendandi’s Observatory began at three in the morning, and lasted four hours. It appeared to have occurred seven thousand miles away. The quivering of the apparatus carried off the quills of the instrument. Received 8.40 p.m., June 27. CAPETOWN, June 26. Reports of the shock registered at the Royal Observatory lasted two and a half hours, beginning at 3.50 in the morning. It was apparently 560 miles off. CORRECTED LOCALITY REPORT.

The Riverview Observatory explains that a mistake was made in centering yesterday’s earthquake at Poit Moresby, through a hasty reading ot the machine. The real position was south ot Maequarrie Island, 1740 miles from Sydney. The disturbance was very' violeu;, and continued for over half an hour, one instrument vibrating so much that it kept hitting against the stop. .
