PARIS, June 16
The pearls, formerly owned by Madame Thiers (widow of the famous statesman), have been sold by auction for a record sum of £142,000. The pearls were presented to the Louvre by Thiers' sister, in 1881, but as their artistic value as an exhibit was considered expired, Parliament agreed to the sale. The proceeds will be applied in aid of charities.
