McDEVITT WINS

Tho much-talked-of race for +ho Australasian championship was touch on the Northern Wairoa river to-dav in beautiful weather and water conditloTho starters were.— J. McDevitt and G CeruLi (Australia). Darcy Hadhdd (Auckland), and James Mason (Whauguroi) It was recognised that .the race would tie a contest, between Hadfield and McDevitt, the latter being favourite on the day. The result piove.l that the public’s ideas were right, as after tho first- two miles lie took the lead and won iairiy comfortably or three lengths from Tladfiekl. who was phiinlv out of condition. The oth n two starters were outclassed, and finished some distance in the rear. Hadfiehl rowed a wonderful race, and fit and well and with a better boat (the one he rowed in to-dav being old and heavy) would have given McDevitt something to think about. MoDcvitt’s win was very popular, as he had trained very consistently and made many friends on the river.
