Mr Justice McCardie, summing up in the O’Dwysr ease, expressed the view that General Dyer, under vravs exceptional circumstances, had acted rightly. “In my opinion ho was wrongly punished by the Secretary for India.” Sir Michael O’Dwyer was awarded £SOO.
The case lasted 2 6 days, and the cost is estimated at £30,000.
(TMs was a libel action against Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair for statements in the laiter’s book based on the Amristar affair, in which General Dyer ordered his troops to open.fire on the assembled natives.)
