PENNY POSTAGE.
AUSTRALIA STANDS OUT. By Tc!?cvaph—Press Association. DARG AVILLE, Thursday. The Hon. J. G. Coates and Mr R. IV MeVilly (General Manager of Railways) arrived here last evening and received representations regarding various mailers. . The Hon J. G. Coates made an important statement in connection with liennv postage, which will come into operation on October 1. Ho said all conn tries in the Postal Union with the exception of the Australian Commonwealth, had agreed to accept penny postage from New Zealand, ami he had received a communication to that effect yesterday. Ho did not know the reason for the Australian refusal, but “it was not for us to interfere in Australia’s domestic affairs, and 1 suppose they know their own business host.'' Thus all letters to Australia would have to bear the lid postage. He was disappointed, but would try again to see if Australia would not come into line.
