- ■■ ' S.C. CHAMPIONSHIP. B. A. SCOTT WINNER. The annual South Canterbury golf championship was held on the Highfield links yesterday in fine, though cold weather. The finks were in splendid order, thanks to the good work of the Ground Committee, and the greenkeeper. Play started at 8.35 a.m., and finished at 4.30 p.m., the meeting being an unqualified success. There was a record entry of 85, entries being received from Christchurch, Ashburton, Fairlie, Waimate, North Otago, Dunedin and Hokitika. Owing to the growing popularity of this meeting, and the ever increasing number of entries, it was seen yesterday that something will have to be done in the way of limiting the number of competitors in order to prevent congestion. Play, though good yesterday, was hot up to . the usual standard, this no doubt being due, in a measure at all events, to the , weather conditions. The winner turned up in E. A. Scott, last year’s club ' champion, who was warmly congratulated on his victory. The runner-up was B. A. Porritt, a medical student, of Dunedin, who is looked upon as a coming champion. In conjunction with the championship, a Medal Handicap was held in the morning, and another m the afternoon. The former was won by H. T. Thompson, and the latter by B. A. Porritt. An appetising dinner, and a dainty afternoon tea were served to the players, and for their kind assistance in providing these, thanks were recorded to the members of the Ladies’ Club. Mr W. J. Cotterill, as club again proved a first class executive offi- • cer, and he and Mrs Cotterill were in a large measure responsible for the complete success of the meeting.
