Tfc 3 understood that the Japanese Exclusion league of California has filed a brief with Mr Tl.uftVies petitioning ror abrogation of tho “gentleman s agreement 73 with ,1 apnn, and declaring that no self-respecting world Power should have m ado such a pact. , A letter, signed by Californian Senators and Congressmen, accompanied the brief, generally approving of tho contents, and inviting serious consideration bv Air Hughes. ‘ The brief states: “To-day intelligent ■white business, professional ,and labouiing elements which until a lew' months ago derided tho warnings of the Japanese neril, are openly, secretly, directly, and through commissions petitioning for protection.” The brief adds: “A treaty of settlement with Japan would bo a violation and an invasion of the State’s rights.”
