DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKE. CHINESE PORT DESTROYED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. TOE3O, Feb. 21. An earthquake • destroyed Swatow, China. Two thousand casualties are reported. , ! [Swatow is- a. treaty port with a population of 38,000.] A CASTAWAY'S HARD TIMES. ' BRISBANE, Ffeb. 22A search steamer discovered a ma« named Mackenzie, the sole survivor oi the schooner Orete, which was wrecked in the cyclone on January 19. _ When the Orete capsized the captain and his son and two seamen were in th» cabin, and all were drowned. Mackenzie and another seaman, were washed off. The other was drowned, hut Mackenzie drifted to an island. He spent nineteen days, during •which he had little food, ;n making a raft out of kerosene cases. He attempted to reach another island, "out lost his raft. He swam back and spent ten more days on the island. He built another raft, and reached a settler's house on Marble'lsland. ; He was almost exhausted by starvation.
