Thero was a good entry of fftoro sheep, being rather larger than week, and it consisted jdhiofly, of equal numbers of owes and lambs with » few lines of wethers, all of ordinary quality. There was not a very uctaya demand, and with the exception of good sound mouthed owes prioes were a shade weaker. Six and eight tooth ewes made 8s Id to IDs .7d, 6ouod mouth lines 8s to 9s, fair mouth* 6e 6d to 6s 9d, and agod 4b to -4s Bd> ewo lambs 7s 9d to 10s lOd, tho latter price being for an especially good line, mixed sexes Bs to 8» 6d, medium. sorts 6s 6d to 7s Cd, forward wethers 18s Bd, others lis 3d to lis lid.

'Jliere were 7984 taken' for export at 9s Id to 18s 4d, and 432 by butchers at 8s Gd to 16s 9d.'

There was an exceptionally heavy entry of fat sheep, this being the last sale at which ewes will bo sold without a guarantee that they are not in lamb. Notwithstanding tho large supply there was an active demand throughout tho sale. Wethers, of which there were some prime lines offered) were . very firm, and good ewes sold weld, but aged and inferior sorts were somewhat easier. The range of prices was — Prime wethers 17s to 20s 6d, extra, to 23s 9d, others 12s lOd to 16s 6d, prime ewes 14s to 18s Id, extra to 20s, medium lis to 18s> 6d, aged and light 6s to 10s 6d, merino wethers 7s 5a to 14s 6d.

The supply of beef totalled 262 head or about 150 less than tho previous week. Included in the entry were some lines of very prime quality, but the general average was below that of the previous sale. There was practically no change in prices except for very prime steers, tnese showing an advance in values. Steers made £72s Gd to £ll, extra to £l4 heifers £5 to £lO ss, and) cows £5 to £ll, equal to 30s for extra prime, 24s to 28s for prime 21s to 23s for medium and 19s 6d to 20s 6d for .cow and inferior per 1001b. Veal calves made 4s 6d. to 60s.

Good dairy cows were in demand, and made £3 10s to £9 15. Pigs were entered in smaller numbers than last week, but there was practically no ohangG in values. Choppers sold up to £4 15s, large baconers 47s 6d to 555, lighter 37b-to 40s, equal to 4d per lb, laree porkers 27s 6d to 335, small 20s to 2os, equal to 4J<2 per lb. N.Z. PAPER MILLS. DUNEDIN, May 31. At tlie annual meeting of the New Zealand Paper Mills Company the chairman said tliat for the first time in their history there liad been a falling off in profits. This' was due to keen competition by English and foreign manufacturers. Owing to cheap labour and abundant supplies of tho best raw materials, all grades of paper and light bags were landed' In the Dominion at very low rates. Another factor was the phenomenal drought in Southland, so that only lialf the power at Mataura. mills was "available. The available balanra was £1125 less tlian that of las', yoar. Owing to the Woodliaugh fire the directors reoomended a reduction of the dividend, to 6 per cent, for the year, and the carrying of £1603 forward. This amount, 'with the reserve, should meet the fire loss. Tho mill at WoodJmugh would not be rebuilt till tho arrival of an expert from England.
